Reflexology

Reflexology is the science that deals with the principles that there are reflex points on the hands and feet that correlate to every organ, gland and part of the body.

REFLEXOLOGY

Did·you·know…reflexology can be dated back to Egyptian times?

The science of Reflexology can be dated back to Egyptian times. Reflexology has been said to be the science that is depicted on a wall mural in the Tomb of Ankhmahor from the early 6th Dynasty dating back to about 2330 BC. This tomb is also referred to as the “Physician’s Tomb”, because it contains many murals depicting scenes of medical practices.

The concept of Reflexology started being used in the United States by Dr. William G. FitzGerald, MD around 1909. Dr. FitzGerald was an ear, nose and throat surgeon, and is considered the founding father of Zone Therapy. He found that by working different zones of the feet, he was able to conduct surgery without the use of anesthesia! It wasn’t until around the 1930s that a woman by the name of Eunic Ingham coined the term “Reflexology”. Through her study of Dr. FitzGerald’s work, she came to the conclusion that specific areas on the feet stimulated particular areas in the body when worked.

Did·you·know…there are over 7,000 nerve endings in the feet?

When the reflexes in the feet are stimulated, these nerve endings are being told to send signals to the rest of the body. During a reflexology session, we are increasing circulation and blood flow to the rest of the body. Improved circulation and blood flow in the body has been known to help reduce inflammation, improve the body’s immune response, increase energy levels, improve mental clarity, and increase the amount of nutrients being absorbed during digestion, plus so much more!

Did·you·know…the average person will walk approximately 216,262,500 steps in their lifetime?

Our feet carry us through life…through many exciting adventures! Many people I talk to believe that the calluses they have on their feet are due to the way their shoes rub against parts of the feet when they walk. While this may be true, I learned in reflexology class that calluses on our feet are unique to each of us. Their purpose is to protect the reflex! Through my studies, I also learned that we hold our emotions in our body. Each emotion is held in a different part of the body. When we look at the callus, and its location on the foot, it tells us a whole story about our emotional and physical health. By working the reflexes, we are working to break up the congestion in these reflexes to help bring the body back into balance.

Did·you·know…the difference between massage therapy and reflexology is acid?

Lactic·Acid is created when your body breaks down glucose and other carbohydrates. Lactate provides fuel for the cells during exercise, and is then naturally flushed from the body. When there is a build up of lactic acid in the muscle tissue, it is called acidosis. Acidosis can cause muscle fatigue and soreness. Massage helps to increase circulation and blood flow to the muscles. When circulation and blood flow is increased, the body can better flush out and release any build up of toxins…much like in exercise!

Uric·Acid is created when the body breaks down purines. Purines are produced in the body, but also found in some foods and drinks we consume. After being created, uric acid travels to the kidneys where it is filtered and then flushed out of the body through urine. If your body makes too much uric acid, or is unable to flush all of the uric acid out through urine, it will crystallize and collect in the joints or sit in the kidneys (hello gout and kidney stones). It likes to reside in areas that are furthest away from the heart, including our hands and feet. When the reflex points in the hands or feet are worked, congestion is broken up and the body is better able to flush out any build up of uric acid in the body.
